not athletic

I’m not naturally athletic. Never have been and never considered myself to be.

Growing up my parents signed my brother and I up for bunch of lessons in the hopes of unlocking some talent, but nothing panned out. They did, however, place a lot of emphasis on health. That meant being constantly encouraged to go for a run around the block or going to the community pool for a swim.

Fast forward to adult life and a lot of my time and energy is now spent swimming / biking / running / working out in general. And I really love it.

What does it mean to be an athlete? Per usual found others pondering the same on Quora:

The word athletic means ‘like an athlete’. Athlete comes from ancient Greek αθλητής (athletés) which is derived from αθλoς (athlos), the word for a contest or struggle. As such, competitiveness and effort are the key characteristics of an athlete.

Others mention the mental aspect of athleticism, that it goes beyond physical ability. Which made me feel a lot a more comfortable identifying with it.

So yeah. Fitness fanatic, weekend warrior, amateur athlete. Definitely not born with it. But 100% embracing this lifestyle.
